The History Of Smart Locks

New front doors have come a long way since the days of old wood technology. Not only in material, new front doors have been engineered with design and energy efficiency in mind. There have been some great new technological advances in front door replacement especially with keyless entry systems. Keep reading to learn some history you can share with your friends. Not only is this article informative, it’s fascinating too! As doors advance even further in the coming years we can’t wait to see where they go.

First Locks

The invention of the time lock in 1873 by James Sargent was the first foray into smart locks. This was a lock that would only open at a set time. Sargent took it a step further in 1880 with time delay locks that opened after a set time. He pushed the boundaries of locking mechanisms and how we use them today.

First Push Locks

The 1980s saw the first instances of a keyless entry system. It was introduced on the Ford Thunderbird. At that time, keyless meant replacing the traditional key with a keypad mounted on the driver’s door, usually above the door handle. This was just the first of these prototypes. The technology didn’t start advancing to entry doors until the late 1990’s. In the early years, smart door locks were almost synonymous with high-end home improvement and could only be afforded by the upper wealthy because the technology was still very expensive to manufacture.

Innovation

The earliest use of smart door locks in the country was in the hotel industry. This kind of hotel lock opened through a card and other radio frequency, and brought convenience to the users. The management of hotels had a more simple and effective way to get customers into their rooms. This avoided the storage inconvenience and management confusion caused by mechanical keys.

Smart Locks

Smart locks have only been around for about the past 10 years. In that time they’ve come a long way. From the first prototypes which were push buttons you can now control your front door lock with your cell phone. Some advanced locks even come with fingerprint recognition.

Wireless Communication

Combine your smart lock with your video doorbell surveillance and you can talk to people dropping off packages. You can see who is ringing your doorbell, and you can even use multiple different apps to control your entire home.

Future Advancements

Since 2015, more and more intelligent door locks with networking capabilities have entered into the equation. As more technology advances so will the locks on your front door. We can’t wait to see what new invention comes out next.
