When it comes to how to pick the best front door it really comes down to one major factor in my opinion . . .  The Color of your house. There are a couple secondary things to consider like how bold of a look you want, and personal style too, but mainly we’ll focus today on house color. Why is this so important?

When looking for a new paint color (or choosing a front door) for your home you want to prioritize your house color first. Does your house need to be painted soon? Are you keeping the current paint? Or are you simply repainting with the same color? All are huge factors when deciding on a door. You don’t want to paint your front door a color that matches your current paint color, to only switch the color of your home later and have it clash. Take all of these things into consideration when you choose a new door/new door color.

Another thing to remember is the color wheel basics. Most of us learned in elementary or high school art class that opposites on the color wheel are complementary. The high contrast of complementary colors creates a vibrant look especially when used at full saturation. This color scheme must be managed well so it is not jarring.

Let’s take a look at a few things in nature to make this point even clearer.

See how purple and yellow are opposites on the color wheel above? Pansies have the color wheel down pat without even having to try. Another example is watermelons . . .

They copy the pink and green of the color wheel above. It’s amazing to me that these colors just pop up naturally almost as if it’s giving us hints on how to decorate our own homes.

In real life my old boss had a yellow house with a blue door much like the one in this picture below.

See how the blue of the door really compliments the yellow of the house? These are bright colors bold colors. We’re not saying that everybody has to go this bold. You should choose a color for your exterior door that matches the color palette for your home.  This is just a demonstration of how opposite colors truly compliment each other. It’s when people get too matchy matchy that things tend to blend in.

You could even pick a more traditional wood look and still have it be complementary. This store still makes a statement.

The nice cream color of the house is very subdued but still modern, while the wood finish of the front door really pops. Both options give the sense of nicely styled homes, great exterior color, and curb appeal. This is the stuff you want to see when you come home.

Pick a more neutral color like wood, white or black door that will compliment more colors. That way if you decide you want a bolder house color later it will work with most colors instead of against them. Really the point of this article is to make your life easier. You don’t want to have to repaint your exterior door later down the road.

If you choose a new door from Conservation Construction of Texas our doors are 4x more energy efficient than old wood doors, and with our amazing durafuse finishing system they are scratch, dent, and warp resistant. That means you’ll get a modern style door with high detailed embossing, and the paint will never fade. Your door will be as beautiful and energy efficient in 20+ years as the day it was installed.

In conclusion, remember to choose complementary colors for you door so you get a more eye catching look. Choose a paint the works with the exterior color of your home. Choose a bold door that really pops to get a bolder look. If you want a door that compliments more colors pick a neutral color to so if fits in with new colors over the years.
