As we head into spring we get to one of both my favorite and least favorite times of the year. Spring Cleaning. Although I love the look and feel of a clean house, I am not super thrilled when it’s time to get down to using actual elbow grease to get this done. I’m sure there are more than a few other people out there with my same views. Although I’m not an excessive compulsive cleaner, I do like to keep a clean house. Most of the time I do this to avoid a huge drawn out cleaning at the end of the week.
I don’t think anybody can deny that a clean house makes you feel good. It’s like you’re stepping into a freshened up hotel room and things smell fresh and clean. It’s good to be diligent about spring cleaning and do a thorough job so that you can avoid cleaning for a while afterwards.
So here are the places (in our opinion) that get missed when Spring Cleaning starts up! There is some very useful cleaning tips and cleaning supplies that we recommend in helping with this daunting task.
The number one place I’d like to mention to clean is under the couch. It’s easy to forget to clean this spot because there is a ton of effort needed to move the furniture out of the way to clean under it. It is for this reason alone that it needs to be cleaned at least once a year. Dust bunnies can pile up and it’s important to vacuum them out so they are no more!
The second spot that we recommend cleaning is your much overlooked ceiling fan. If you ever took the time to look at the individual fan blades you’d see how much dust actually accumulates on top of them. White vinegar and water helps to get this grime off the ceiling fan.
Thirdly don’t forget to clean this highly overlooked spot: light switches and handles of doors. I don’t know about you but these spots are hardly ever cleaned in my house and they are the most touched. So it’s always good to use bleach or a strong sanitizer that gets all the grime off the switches and handles that has built up over time. If you need to you can always take some Q tips. These get into the small cracks above and below the switches and handles. This will ensure these “hot spots” for growing bacteria will be eliminated.
Kitchen Cabinets are easily overlooked because all we do is put clean items in them. It is good to clean the tops, insides and bottom of kitchen cabinets. Cleaning cloths and all purpose cleaner can easily wipe away any dust and have your home looking shiny. Your plates will sit in an ultra sanitary place too so you know when you’re eating off them they are extra squeaky clean.
Forth, the washer and dryer. Especially if you have a front loading washer in your home it is essential to wipe down the glass panel. You can also wipe out excess liquid to ensure that mold and mildew don’t build up. If you need to you can always run an empty load to wash out any bad smells that have accumulated in the machine. They make special detergents for this. Vinegar also works really well at eliminating pesky odors.
Finally the windows in your home could use some extra tlc during this time of the year. Dirt and grime often build up in the cracks and it’s not very good to breath that in. Wipe down the windows and the sills--all the little cracks really and you’ll notice your home look entirely new. Q tips are a good thing to use if there are small stubborn cracks that don’t seem to be getting cleaned with a regular towel. While your cleaning if you notice any unwanted breezes, fog, or cracks in your window you could always consider replacing them for new windows.
