I have this hilarious memory from my childhood that just popped into my head as I was starting to write this article. I was about 18 years old. My good friend and her family had decided to move to Durango Colorado. This was back in 2006. Me, wanting to go visit her, decided to drive there myself and spend a week with her family. Her family actually moved to a place called Bayfield Colorado which was on the outskirts of Durango. They lived in this little cabin out in the middle of the woods. They had bears visit frequently. In fact, someone in their house forgot to latch the door one night and the bear came strolling into their house looking for food.

I loved my visit there. It was like stepping into a quaint little cottage from Snow White, there was even a river out back that ran through their yard.  Image result for 1950's oven pull downBut one thing about this cabin stood out to me more than anything else, and that was their hideous 1950’s oven much like the one depicted here.

On top of this, no joke, it was a bright blue color. It felt really out of place as the rest of their cabin was pretty modern. Sure, the oven was still functioning, but was it practical? I would argue no. I don’t think it was energy efficient either.

This memory reminded me of today’s article because I had a similar, albeit not the same situation, happening in my own house a couple years ago. It was a problem with my old 1980’s windows. When we first bought the house we knew we had a window problem. Practically every window in the house was cracked, holy, or non functional. I could literally not even get the windows open without my husbands help because they required so much force to open. The blinds would blow in when breezes came by because of the gaping holes in the frames. Not to mention the fact that those holes allowed a lot of spiders inside the home.

Now, I’m just as frugal as one can be. I try not to spend extra money on anything in my house or other areas in my life, but these windows were causing me a lot of anxiety. The windows embarrassed me.  On top of the cracks in the glass, my windows had huge condensation problems. After only a few short months I was more than fed up the windows. When I started working for a company that replaced windows, I thought, here’s my chance to get new windows. Long story short,  I got my pricing, got the windows measured, and had them installed within a month.

My friend’s son said, “If anybody needed new windows it was you guys. I’m glad you replaced them.” He was ten when he told me this. This made me feel like I made the right choice. To give you an example of just how bad the windows were I have included a picture.

Gross, right? What a difference the windows made, truly. As you can see from this other close up here. My windows were made of aluminum. This was standard practice back in the day, but there are several reasons to switch to new vinyl windows now. The main reason aluminum windows are holding you back is because they are not energy efficient. Old aluminum windows contract and expand with the sun’s heat. This is what often leads to those seal problems you see in the windows. They’d either break away from the glass when they are hot or melt the sealant between the glass causing goop to run down the windows. This leads to that condensation problem as well.

Secondly, aluminum frame windows absorb the sun’s heat and are hot to the touch. This can increase the inside temperature of your home, and who wants that? There would be sometimes I would try to open the windows and they would burn my fingertips. You know that can’t be energy efficient. Finally, old aluminum glass doesn’t have the energy efficient properties of today’s vinyl windows. New glass absorbs the sun’s heat with ease, blocking the UV rays from entering your home or even damaging the glass. In fact, all new windows have to have Low-E glass to be up to code.

Don’t be stuck in a time warp. When guests enter your home they shouldn’t be transported back to another decade. New energy efficient products like the Conservation window can save you a ton of money on energy costs and are a whole lot more functional than old aluminum windows.
